I hated going to counselling. I was maybe 8 or 9 years old and just dreaded it every single time. How many times was she going to ask me "how did that make you feel?". It felt like we were put on a stage and our family had to perform for her. I just totally dreaded it.
Fast forward a few years. Looking back on those Tuesday morning family outtings at the therapist office, I can now appreciate what that therapist was doing. And having now gone through school and experiences of my own, I realize that we are all different. Though at that age I may not have taken to being asked a bunch of questions, others would have totally loved it. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all therapist. We have different training, specializations, interests and life experiences.
My counselling style may be a bit different from others. Of course, just like everyone else, I am non-judgemental, compassionate, understanding, strive to help others... you know, the same things that all the other therapists say. But there is more to me and my approach than that. I use sensitive humour. I offer a no-nonsense, direct approach to the problems. I say it how it is. My style is to challenge you. To help declutter your thoughts and actions. To simplify your life. I don't do any therapy "lingo", or at least try not to. I don't pretend to be an expert of your life. I am highly focused on solutions. Even if you are in the worse possible situation and feel like there is absolutely zero hope, trust me, I will find it. And will help you find the right solutions that makes sense to.... you!
I graduated from a leading institute in Professional Counselling where I achieved "competent" status with specific training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Gestalt Therapy and others. This education surpasses the education requirement from the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario for number of education hours relating to therapy. I have a certificate in EFT Couple Therapy from the ICEEFT, and am a certified facilitator of the Prepare-Enrich program for couples. I am a certified member of the Gottman Couples Checkup Assessment program.
I operate a full time practice up on the east mountain of Hamilton, conveniently located on Fennell Avenue East, just a few blocks from Upper Sherman. I have clients come from St.Catharines, Brantford, Kitchener, Burlington, Milton, Oakville and even some further away. Easy access from major roads and on a major bus route.
And that's pretty much it for me. I look forward to hearing your story!
